A Handbook On Coaching and Mentoring

$6

Coaching and mentoring are tools of change. In business, a coach provides guidance to clients on their goals and helps them to unleash their potentials, while a mentor is someone who shares his knowledge, skills and experience, to assist another to grow and develop.

The critical difference between coaching and mentoring is the training approach and the methodology of engagement. In coaching, a structured approach is taken, while during mentoring, a more relationship-focused method is usually recommended. In other words, coaching is said to be process driven and mentoring is said to be relationship oriented.

Coaching and mentoring are deployed for various reasons in organizations. Examples include to improve performance, to transfer skills, to inspire and empower subordinates, and as a succession mechanism. In the United States, SCORE, the nation’s largest network of volunteers, experts, business mentors, is dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals. This is done through mentoring, education and trade events.

This handbook and training companion will help you understand and explain the purpose and the difference between coaching and mentoring and how each can be effectively used in business, as a tool for breakthrough performance, and also for human capital development.
