Significance of helping others to win

What will you give your life for?   What are you going to be remembered for when the bell tolls for thee?

World history is garnished with examples of men and women who traded their lives for their beliefs.  Some of them willingly accepted the possibility of death rather than back down in their relentless pursuits. Their causes sometimes were impersonal, and as a consequence, they have eternal values and consequences. Such were the fates of those who defied public prosecutions, conspiracies, and even tyrants in their struggles to rebuild trust in our shared humanity and prosperity. They were unstoppable because they recognized that their causes were much bigger and far more important than their lives.  So they chose to die to themselves in order to live for the common good. As a result, they left the stage under various circumstances as all-time heroes and heroines.

Nelson Mandela was such a hero.  He willingly chose to trade his life in prison for 28 years to give South Africa freedom forever.  Before him was civil rights activist, Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. who lost his life because of his dream of equal rights for all American. Earlier than both men, was Mahatma Gandhi, who without violence gave his country, India, independence. They were men with extraordinary foresight, tenacity, grit, and unwavering commitment to a life of service, success, and significance.  In their imaginations, they saw visions of better days ahead for their countries, and they traded their lives to realize them.

SIGFICANCE IS A MINDSET

It’s not about stuff.  Rather, it is about your concept of and attitude to life.

Consider this fact. Through all the ages, verifiable records show that the vast majority of the people we adore and esteem started out in life from very humble backgrounds, but ended up living a life of gargantuan impact. They were ordinary people like you and me who defied unfathomable odds to leave their foot prints on the sands of time.  Their legacies have become beacons of hope, shining lights illumining life’s uncertain pathways for generations yet unborn. To underscore my point, let’s highlight the brief profiles of just two of such legendary leaders who incidentally are ladies.

  • Joan of Arc

A peasant girl in medieval France, Joan lived a life of significance. According to History, she believed that God had chosen her to lead France to victory in its long-running war with England. With no military training, Joan convinced the embattled crown prince Charles of Valois to allow her to lead a French army to the besieged city of Orléans, where it achieved a momentous victory over the English and their French allies, the Burgundians. In her own words, “All battles are won in the mind… and every man gives his life for what he believes.”

  • Mother Teresa

Showed a depraved world what charity and philanthropy really mean in spirit and truth. In her own words, the Saint of Calcutta summed up her life in this manner: “By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, I am an IndianBy faithI am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.”

Before her death on September 5, 1997, Mother Teresa was one of the most influential women of the 20th century, and her legacies lives forever. Her charities- Missionaries of Charity, has over 4,500 nuns and was active in 133 countries spanned across continents.  Her congregations managed people who were dying of HIV/aids, leprosy and tuberculosis.  In spite of being a nun, she had unhindered access to heads of governments and CEOs of leading multinational companies around the world. Her influence was legendary and her significance knew no social or geographic boundaries.  She was an epitome of a life of significance.
